Greg Girard: In the Near Distance 1973-86

The photographs coming together in Greg Girard’s „In the Near Distance 1973-86“ are the images of a traveler. They are a survey of ever changing places, are reconnaissances and observances of unknown environments. At the same time they are approaches to the photographic medium; early examinations and experiments that already begin to show an independent style and distinctive aesthetics.

The second photography book published by the Kominek Gallery is dedicated to the artistic initiation of Canadian photographer Greg Girard – author of „Kowloon City“, „City of Darkness“ and „Phantom Shanghai“. Already during his high school years in his hometown Vancouver Girard was drawn to the waterfront where he roamed the streets, spent the nights in cheap hotels and photographically recorded his impressions. At 18 he took a Philippine freighter to Hong Kong and travelled through Asia – a country that should fascinate and attract him for years to come. After stopovers in Vancouver and Tokyo, a withdraw from university and travels throughout the US, Girard eventually went to Hong Kong in 1982 – and stayed. Until he chose Shanghai as new domicile in 1998.

„In the Near Distance 1973-86“ is the document of his early wanderings, the adolescent search for prospects and aims: nocturnal street sceneries, portraits of “sailors and friends”, images of creatures of the night and hotel rooms. In addition to black-and-white-materials Girard mainly used color slides during those years – and thus adds a new and important body of work to the color photography of the seventies. Consciously Girard uses the light of neon lamps and electric bulbs, explores the very particular, slightly shifted color temperatures of the slides and approaches a creative stylistic device that he brings to perfection in his work “Phantom Shanghai”, published in 2007. Inspired by the aesthetics of seventies movies, the literature of Peter Handke and by Asian culture, Girard very early finds an individual imagery, in which he strikingly captures his visual impressions, his emotions, as well as the atmosphere of the different places and stations of his journeys.
